Compared to the trumpet, the cornet features a greater proportion of conical tubing, which gives it a mellow, softer tone.  Yamaha examined all of the great cornets of the past and after much study we developed techniques for making a modern instrument with a beautiful traditional tone, but with improved response and accurate intonation.
